Sons Of The Pioneers at the WMCA

Sons Of The Pioneers at the WMCA

The Sons of the Pioneers are synonymous with the ultimate in Cowboy music. For decades the premier western singing group has musically painted unforgettable images and stories of horses, cattle, cowboys, "night herds", tall timber, cool water, canyons and prairies. Their original songs like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "Cool Water" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" are classics forever entwined into the lore and mystique of the American West. Both "Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water" have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

First started by Roy Rogers and the gifted songwriters Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer the group garnered national and international fans through appearances in almost 100 western films during the '30s, '40s and '50s. Numerous albums were recorded under contracts with Decca, Columbia, RCA and others. The group provided songs for several John Ford westerns including the soundtrack for "The Searchers" starring John Wayne. When television came along they regularly appeared on the Roy Rogers Show and had guest appearances on such programs as the Barbara Mandrell Show. Walt Disney called upon the Pioneers to supply the soundtrack for the film "Pecos Bill". They were the first cowboy musical group to perform at Carnegie Hall and the first to headline in Las Vegas casinos.

The current group's configuration is part of a continuous and uninterrupted 80 year existence in which they have accumulated more coveted honors and awards than anyone in Western music. The group has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Western Music Association Hall of Fame and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame among others. The Smithsonian Institute named them as "National Treasures".

The Pioneers are known around the world for their unique three and four part harmonies. According to their "trail boss", Tommy Nallie who joined the group in the 1980's, "We are honored to be returning to Canada. We had a Canadian tour in 2012 and we were parade marshalls for the Calgary Stampede in the 1990's." Nallie said , "Every concert is pure Cowboy music packed with our timeless hits, solid western swing and a good measure of comedy and banter. Each of the five members share the vocals and instrumentals." Part of the hallmark sound comes from acoustic fiddles, mandolin, upright bass, and lead and rhythm guitars.

When not performing their regular theater concert season in Branson, Missouri, the Pioneers have recently been invited to perform on RFD-TV, PBS program, on Nashville's Grand Ol Opry and at various theaters and festivals across the country.

The Collingsworth Family at the WMCA

Since their first engagement together as musicians for a church camp in Petersburg, Michigan in August, 1986 until now, the ministry God has given Phil & Kim has expanded and flourished. Their passion has become a full-time livelihood that involves their entire family. Their boundaries of influence have expanded until they have sung and played all over the United States and Canada (as well as internationally) into their 29th year of ministry. Their constant, persistent attention to cutting-edge arranging, musical excellence, and a proper balance of spiritual emphasis are the keys to success God has helped them tap.

It has become apparent that the more we get to know The Collingsworth Family, our spiritual level gets another boost. The impact of a fulltime family ministry continues to grow by being totally committed to the Lord. They bring excitement to the stage musically but never fail to give God the glory. An outstanding feature of their concerts is their pursuit of excellence, lifting the message above all else. Their willingness to share their gifts with us in Canada has been a real blessing. We are delighted to have them return to the Canada for our "Spring Concert Tour 2016".

The addition of new family members has given this dedicated family a stronger presence in Gospel Music. Kim Collingsworth will also be bringing her new personal piano "Lucille" to Canada to make this "Spring Concert Tour 2016", a "Grand Experience" as we get to know them better.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Brandon Beethoven, Mendelssohn and a New Virtuoso at the WMCA

"[Schwizgebel's] playing also benefits from a lightening of the instrument, piano playing where every sound rings with unostentatious radiance and effortlessness. "

- Artamag

James Feddeck, conductor
Louis Schwizgebel, piano

Smetana: Má vlast (My Homeland): Sárka and Vlitava (The Moldau)
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A major (Italian)

Beethoven's piano concertos place the soloist as a direct protagonist to the orchestra - a role he regularly took himself when performing the five he wrote. We welcome Swiss pianist and 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Louis Schwizgebel to interpret Beethoven's 2nd Piano Concerto.

Just back from Italy, Mendelssohn filled his Fourth Symphony with life-affirming Mediterranean sun and spirit. Bedřich Smetana created a powerful expression of Czech national spirit in the set of symphonic poems Má vlast (My Homeland), our opening music, perhaps best known for The Moldau

Royal Winnipeg Ballet: Going Home Star at the WMCA

Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet returns to Brandon with its highly acclaimed production, Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation, a deeply moving ballet that represents the many stories, both told and untold, by survivors of the Indian residential school system. Going Home Star - Truth and Reconciliationis choreographed by Mark Godden (Angels In The Architecture, Dracula), in collaboration with acclaimed author Joseph Boyden (The Orenda, Three Day Road), associate producer Tina Keeper and with the guidance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and members of the Aboriginal community

The ballet explores the world of Annie, a young, urban First Nations woman adrift in a contemporary life of youthful excess. Annie feels strangely disconnected within her superficial loop. But when she meets Gordon, a longhaired trickster disguised as a homeless man, she's propelled into a world she's always sensed but never seen. Together, Annie and Gordon travel the streets of this world but also the roads of their ancestors, and learn that without truth, there is no reconciliation.

"inspired and inspiring...may be the most important dance (ever) mounted by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet." - CBC
